An important part of planning for and safeguarding our family member with disability will always include involving others in their lives. When the people who are involved have a clear understanding of our vision for our family member and their vision for themselves, then their involvement is more likely to reflect our hopes and wishes.
There are a number of ways that we can involve others, whether in small or large roles, either formally or informally. Check the links below to find out more.
Sharing Information
Sharing important verbal and written information with trusted others is an important safeguarding strategy for our family member. Click here for the booklet: Document of Personal Information: Ideas and strategies for sharing important personal information.
Legal and Financial Roles
It is important that the people we ask to take on any legal and financial roles have a clear understanding of our family member and our vision for their life both now and into the future. Planning
Involving others in our planning is an effective way to get a number of people together to think with us, to share their perspectives and to have some ownership of the outcomes that we seek through planning for and with our family member. Support circles
A support circle can provide a family with an opportunity to gather together people from their networks on a regular basis. Involving people in this way can deepen their understanding and commitment to our family member, and to support them in their decision making and planning for a good and safe life both now and in the future.
